WILLIAM A. NELSON, age 77, of Portage, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Horton VNA Hospice in Valparaiso. William was a US Army Veteran and retired stationary engineer/fireman with the Chicago Board of Education. He was a longtime Portage resident and a member of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church. William was also a member of Portage American Legion Post #260.
William is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Nelson (John Harriman) of Portage, 5 grandchildren: Brittany, Meagan, Johnathan and Joel (Yolanda) Harriman, all of Portage and Karissa Harriman of Maine, 2 great grandchildren: Aiden Harriman & Adriana Morse, sisters-in-law, Anita Mendez of Portage and Mildred Nelson of Illinois, numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora Lee, son, Michael and brother, Edward Nelson. Memorials are preferred to the family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 19, 2012 at 10 am at Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Rd., Portage, with Rev. Andrew J. Corona officiating. He will be taken to church Friday morning at 9:00 am. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Portage. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-5 & 6-8 pm with an American Legion service at 7:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, 219-762-3013 or online at www.reesfuneralhomes.com.
